Every March during Red Cross Month, the Red Cross honors the nearly 700,000 people who volunteer to perform vital services for the organization, as well as the more than 4 million blood donors who contribute to building the nation’s blood supply. In 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated March as Red Cross Month. Since that time, all of our U.S. presidents have designated March as Red Cross Month to recognize how our organization helps people across the country and around the world.
The American Red Cross encourages groups and individuals to serve their communities through various volunteer activities that include: giving blood or participating in blood drives, teaching health and safety classes, responding to current disasters and more. The Red Cross provides help and support in many ways to people in this country and around the world by providing 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families at home and around the world. Collecting and distributing about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply, training millions of people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills, and helping millions of people around the world through disaster management and disease prevention activities.
An average of 91 cents of every dollar the American Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. Everything they do depends on the needs of the people they serve. This March, we encourage you participate – become a part of the Red Cross.
