Know Your Options! Is the 2016 theme for National Hospice & Palliative Care Month which kicks off today!

During the month of November, the home care and hospice community honor the millions of nurses, home care aides, social workers, and therapists who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve and to increase an overall awareness of palliative care and hospice. Hospice helps both patients and families focus on LIVING. It is centered on palliative care, which is the management of pain and symptoms so that every moment can be as comfortable and rewarding as possible.

Hospice as we know it today, began in 1967 in England by a woman named Cicely Saunders. Cicely was a nurse who in 1960 wrote her first book – Care of Dying while working hard to improve the care of the terminally ill. In 1967 she founded St. Christopher’s Hospice in London, the first purpose-built hospice which became the model for hospice care internationally. Cicely served as Medical Director up until 1985 where hospice was about combining expert pain and symptom relief with holistic care to meet physical, social, and spiritual needs of patients, families, and loved-ones. In 2005 when Cicely herself passed away, there were more than 8,000 hospices established throughout the world.

A vivid example of the difference just one person can make. This month is a time for CompassionCare Hospice to raise awareness on the high-quality of care that hospice can provide to patients and families-helping them live as fully as possible. Let’s talk about living. Let’s talk about hospice.
