October is healthy lung month.
It makes sense. So many of us have problems pertaining to our lungs this time of year. Pollens, molds, and other allergies are so prevalent this time of year. Fall is a great time of the year for these allergens because it is colder and wetter. Someone severely allergic to pollens and/ or molds may experience chronic sinus problems (sinusitis) and even asthma attacks. Some lung problems aren’t caused by allergies, but they are caused by the person themselves.
Smoking leads to many problems with the lungs and air passageways as well as other parts of the body. Smoking can lead to medical issues such as bronchitis, emphysema, cardiopulmonary disease, high blood pressure (which can lead to heart attack and stroke), vasoconstriction (constriction or narrowing of blood vessels) which also may lead to heart attack and stroke, DVT (deep vein thrombosis or simply a blood clot), pulmonary embolism, as well as being carcinogenic which can cause cancer in the lungs, mouth, and throat. CompassionCare Hospice understands that keeping fit and healthy promotes a longer and happier life, and maintaining lung health is primary to maintaining your overall health. Your body needs oxygen to function. Oxygen is obtained through gas exchange that takes place in the lungs.
