National Bullying Prevention Month is a nationwide campaign founded in 2006 by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, this campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities around the world to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention.
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time, including making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically/verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems.
This month serves as a reminder that bullying prevention must be tackled by educating ourselves, our communities and the youth in our lives. So, as the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention, we ask that you take the time this month to become more aware of the serious consequences of bullying and to learn more about what you can do help prevent bullying.
The Week of October 17th is designated “STAND UP for others week”. When you see someone being bullied, be brave and STAND UP for them. Bullies have been known to back off when others stand up for their victims. This is a time to see everyone’s differences and similarities: Whether individuals are LGBT, African American, Asian, Muslim, or disabled-make friends 🙂
