The theme of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2016 is: Living and dying in pain: It doesn’t have to happen.
75% of the world population does not have adequate access to controlled medications for pain relief and as a result millions of people suffer from pain which is avoidable and could be managed with proper access to the correct medications…. The purpose of World Hospice & Palliative Care Day is to increase the availability of hospice and palliative care throughout the world and to raise awareness and understanding of the needs – medical, social, practical, spiritual – of people living with a life limiting illness and their loved ones involved.
As different societies begin to age throughout the world, the increasing number of people suffering from non-communicable diseases and lack of access to pain medication has made hospice and palliative care an even more urgent subject to understand. Hospice and palliative care services are not just for “the dying” rather, health services that not only have benefits to patients who qualify, but to family members, loved-ones and caregivers as well. Hospice is centered on palliative care, which is the management of pain and symptoms so that every moment can be as comfortable and rewarding as possible.
This day asks people to learn and understand more about hospice and palliative care.
