Prostate Cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and is a leading cause of cancer death in men according to the American Cancer Society. As the month of September brings prostate cancer to light, it’s time to understand this disease and its prevalence. Approaches to screening and prevention, treatment options, and resources that offer updated prostate cancer information are key. Staying informed with the latest news on prevention and screening is an important step in reducing the risk of developing this disease.
Almost all prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas. These cancers develop from the gland cells – the cells that make the prostate fluid that is added to the semen. Other rare types are sarcomas, small cell carcinomas, and transitional cell carcinomas. Some prostate cancers can grow and spread quickly, however most grow slower. The early stages of prostate cancer normally don’t have symptoms to watch out for but more advanced forms cause problems include urinating (particularly at night), blood in the urine, erectile dysfunction or pain in the back, ribs or hips. Things such as age, family history and gene changes can all be a factor in the risk for being diagnosed with prostate cancer.
There’s no sure way to prevent prostate cancer. In general, doctors recommend that men with an average risk of prostate cancer make healthier life choices to prevent it.
