There are many options for elderly care at the end-of-life. Depending on one’s needs. These care options are something we should all know. Some seniors might need minimal assistance to remain safely and comfortably in their own home to pass. Others may require around the clock care and help in a skilled setting. Which of these care options is right for you or a loved your loved one?
That depends on a number of things. Different people have different needs and what is the “right fit” for one person may not be the same for the next. What are your or your loved ones goals, expectations, wants and wishes? And most importantly, what is the reality? Some may opt for palliative care while others begin receiving hospice services. One person might not want to stop going to the hospital for treatment while another can’t even think about another visit. The end-of-life journey becomes much easier and more helpful to accept when these types of questions are answered and decisions are made as early as possible. Choose a primary decision maker who will manage your information and follow your wishes. Even when families know their loved one’s wishes, following through on decisions for or against sustaining or life-prolonging treatments requires communication and coordination.
