August is national immunization awareness month.
This is the time where we emphasize the importance and benefits of taking vaccines that are recommended for different stages in our lives. August is the time recommended to receive your yearly flu shot. Vaccines and flu shots help protect the elderly from disabling conditions. As we age, we are at a higher risk for complications from influenza. This is why flu shots have become so important. Neglecting to take vaccinations not only puts you at risk, but also people you come into contact with. As a senior, you come in contact with your grandchildren and family members, as well as caregivers and other residents in your retirement community. We can all use this month to raise awareness about vaccines, and share strategies to increase immunization rates within our community. The CDC or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that in addition to basic senior flu shots and the pneumococcal vaccine and a second pneumonia immunization be added to retirement healthcare for added protection because pneumonia can be particularly debilitating for aging seniors whose immunity and respiratory system may be compromised. You can get the senior flu shot and pneumococcal vaccine at the same time. The senior flu shot is recommended for anyone over the age of 65.
