July is eye injury prevention month.

You only get one pair of eyes in your life. Take care of them. 2.5 million eye accidents occur each year. 90% of the thousands of eye accidents that occur are preventable with safety eyewear. It is a common misbelief that most of your eye accidents occur in the workplace, this is not true. There are good eye safety regulations put in place in the work place to prevent these. The home is where almost 45% of the reported eye accidents occur. Eye accidents involving household products commonly seen cause 20% of eye injuries each year. Proper lighting and use of handrails can go a long way to improve eye safety. Eye injuries can be serious and debilitating. Falls are a major cause for eye injuries seen in seniors. 11% of eye injuries are caused by slips and falls. CompassionCare Hospice of Las Vegas knows millions of older people fall each year. 1 out of 3 older people falls each year, but half don’t tell their doctor about their falling. You become more likely to fall a second time once you have fallen once. It is of the utmost importance if you suffer an eye injury, consult with an ophthalmologist or other doctor.
