Having conversations with your loved ones about their end-of-life wishes can be a sensitive discussion, however these conversations matter and must be had to learn about your loved one’s wishes so they can be honored at the end-of-life. Although physicians have a tendency to wait until patients are on the decline or close to being imminent before raising the subject of end-of-life planning, it’s better to address this topic ahead of time. Be prepared. Individuals need time to get adjusted to changes happening to them medically, they need time to understand what their options are, and they need to get their families involved so they understand what’s happening and make the right choices for themselves. Physicians should be making a point to discuss end-of-life planning with all older adults—even with those who do not currently have any serious chronic diseases.
