National Heat Awareness Day is May 27, 2016.
It is observed the last Friday of May. National Heat Awareness Day is sponsored by the National Weather Service. Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States. Hot weather is dangerous, and seniors are particularly prone to its threat. A study conducted by the University of Chicago Medical Center found that 40% of heat-related fatalities in the United States were among people over 65. People’s ability to notice changes in their body temperature decreases with age. Underlying health conditions contribute to an older adult’s ability to adapt to heat. Men’s Health Week is celebrated each year as the week leading up to and including Father’s Day.
The purpose of Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men. Join Julie McIntosh, LPN and Community Education Nurse for Compassion Care as we discuss important health issues for men (and the women who love them) including heart disease, high blood pressure and prostate health. This is an opportunity for CompassionCare Hospice to encourage men to seek regular and routine medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. Men’s health is a family issue. “Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue” said Congressman Bill Richardson.
