Did You Know That Heart Disease Is The Leading Cause Of Death In The U.S.
Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States? Your heart health is very important.
When people talk about heart disease, they are usually talking about coronary heart disease (CHD). It’s also called coronary artery disease (CAD). This is the most common type of heart disease. When someone has CHD, the coronary arteries (tubes) that take blood to the heart are narrow or blocked. This happens when cholesterol and fatty material, called plaque, build up in the arteries
You are at higher risk for heart disease if:
- You are a woman over age 55
- You are a man over age 45
- Your father or brother had heart disease before age 55
- Your mother or sister had heart disease before age 65
- As you get older, your risk for heart disease and heart attack increases. But the good news is that heart disease can be prevented.
In observance of National Heart Health Month we have created a video to educate the public about heart disease.
Understanding The Risk Factors
Certain risk factors, such as getting older, can’t be changed. After menopause, women are more likely to develop heart disease. For both women and men, middle age is a time of increasing risk because people are more likely to develop heart disease risk factors during this stage of life. Family history of early heart disease is another risk factor that can’t be changed.
Important risk factors for heart disease that you CAN do something about are: cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, being overweight, physical inactivity, and diabetes. Recent research shows that more than 95 percent of those who die from heart disease have at least one of these major risk factors. NOW is the time to modify these risk factors and protect your heart health!
